I knew from a young age that there was a tug on my heart to help others, but I had no idea that that "little tug" would eventually mean taking "huge leap" of faith. Joyful Restoration Counseling was "born" after God awakened my soul and restored my inner joy following a long season of spiritual drought in my life. Shortly afterwards, God gave me two instructions: "Go Big" and "Go Bold". I didn't understand them at first, but over the next few weeks, it became very clear the direction in which I was to take my next adventure. And, it was a few weeks and countless hours of work after that revelation that this facility officially opened its doors on Oct. 3, 2019. I believe God has big plans for the flood of people He intends to bring to our facility: plans for emotional healing, plans for hope, plans for a future, and plans for freedom from any bondage of addiction, depression, anxiety, trauma, etc. over lives.
Walking alongside someone as they move towards their healing journey is one the most humbling and honoring positions to embrace. I enjoy using a variety of methods to enhance a client's counseling experience including ETT, psychodrama, anger management, and PACT. Sprinkling some prayer, scripture, and spiritual experiences into the mix I believe further deepens the healing experience. I am passionate about healing the underlying trauma that drives the core of shame and self destructive behaviors and helping people find their joy in the journey.
I am a true native to Texas and have been married for 28 years to a man I have known since the third grade. I have two sons, a daughter and son-in-law, and a big yellow lab named Sadie.
The connection between the therapist and client is the backbone of my practice. I love the uniqueness of each person’s personality and experience. I enjoy seeing God’s work in each of our lives, weaving His love and healing through our difficulty, trauma, and illness. I practice EMDR therapy, which is especially effective in dealing with trauma and chronic depression and anxiety. I also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Scripture to help my clients discern truth from the confusion and chaos life throws at us. When appropriate, I use art therapy to compliment the other two.
I specialize in working with adults and teens, and I accept Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Healthcare insurances.
Married 28 years, I have three sons and a daughter-in-law. My journey to counseling includes teaching junior high and high school English and art for 20 years, working in women’s and youth ministry, being a football coach’s wife, and living half the time in West Texas near Midland and the other half in the DFW area of the state of Texas.
God has given me a unique passion and gift for working with children. I delight in spending time with children, learning with them, laughing with them, and yes, even crying with them. Children have a unique perspective of the world and each one is a gift with his/her own set of strengths, weaknesses, and God-given purpose. Through the process of play therapy, I am given the opportunity to enter the world of the children and their system supports, love them, and point them to Jesus, our almighty counselor, savior, and healer.
I have been incredibly blessed to be married to my best friend for twenty-two years and we have two unique, gifted, loving boys of our own, along with a lazy cat. My journey to get to this point has included working in a daycare and twenty years of service in the Texas public education system, serving eleven years as a Kindergarten teacher, two years as a third grade teacher, one year as a first grade teacher and six years as a school counselor. I also have the privilege of raising a child diagnosed with ADHD. I am grateful for each experience that has brought me to this place and excited about the journeys that lie ahead.
I grew up in a ministry family as a pastor's kid and previously served as a law enforcement officer and in the military. While serving as a patrol deputy I experienced life and death situations—seeing both the best and worst of the human condition. As I progressed in my career, I noticed that most of the situations I responded to could have been prevented through alternative means such as therapy. This included both the problems within the different homes and the aftereffects of experiencing traumatic events. I felt called by God to specifically work with individuals and families that have experienced traumatic life events and ongoing relational issues. My experience as a former law enforcement officer and in the army gives me a unique advantage of being able to help first responders, military personnel, and their families during difficult times from a place of understanding. My upbringing as a pastor's kid and background in ministry also give me a unique perspective to assist ministry families. I am married with two young children and we are members of a local church. I look forward to working and walking alongside you during this process and assisting you in achieving your goals.
As an LPC Intern license and am unable to accept insurance, I am seeing clients at a significantly reduced rate.
It is my joy to work alongside individuals battling depression, fear/anxiety, grief,
and life transitions. As a counselor, I operate out of an approach that enables me to view each of my clients holistically. I cultivate a safe environment to encourage clients to become more aware of the way they view their world in ways that foster healthier thought patterns. I am passionate in aiding clients to better understand themselves and meeting them where they are.
I have a passion for facilitating emotional and mental health through counseling, and have pursued the best education available while accumulating experiences to position me to be a compassionate and skilled counselor.
I received my Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from the University of North
Texas, where I also received my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in two years and where I conducted research that was published nationally. My formal education, personal experience, and training in my Master’s program have equipped me to serve adolescent and adult clients, both individually and in the group setting.
Through my own personal experience in counseling as an adolescent, I knew I
wanted to enter the counseling field to be able to meet people where they are at, and help them to grow and heal. It is such an honor to counsel within the Denton community, where I have lived for almost 8 years. When I’m not counseling, you can find me rock climbing at the local gym and volunteering in my church’s youth ministry.
Hello! I’m Cotey. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern, former pastor, husband, and father. In therapy, I use techniques identified and proven helpful by Attachment Based and Emotionally Focused Therapy, along with various others. I utilize an integrated approach to meet goals, bring about awareness, and facilitate change.
In session, it’s my hope and desire to form a partnership where empathy, compassion, and unconditional positive regard are at the center of the counseling process. Together we are able to explore meaningful life experiences that have uniquely impacted you and the story you share. I know that times will not always be comfortable, but I believe that you will find the process of counseling to be worth the effort as you begin to witness change in your life.
As a person and therapist I have walked with those struggling with issues concerning identity, anxiety, men’s issues, adoption, family and relationships, marriage, as well as, grief, parenting, stress, addiction, trauma, and spirituality.
In preparation to best help my clients, I received my Master’s in Counseling and Master’s in Biblical Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary. Here I learned the value of psychology and therapeutic practice while integrated with Christian beliefs. Throughout my experience I’ve observed that counseling helps people, but God heals people. In my training I’ve been equipped to help teens and adults by means of individual, couples, and group counseling.
Outside of therapy, I enjoy outdoor activities, traveling, roasting coffee, sports, and spending time with my wife and two kiddos. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
